Top 5 things to LOVE about Your type 4 hair!

If you told my ten year self that someday I’d wear a TWA, I would’ve laughed in your face. When I say that I hated my hair, trust me, I HATED my hair. I thought it was ugly. I have type 4, afro-kinky hair, and it’s taken a lifetime for me to recognize it’s beauty.

Now, I absolutely LOVE my fro. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t necessarily love the detangling process. Regardless, I have learned to love my kinks & coils. Here are the top 5 things to love about your type 4 hair!

  1. Blackness/African-ness

I see my hair as a reflection of my blackness and African heritage. When I look at my hair, I see my niece & nephews, my brother, my parents, my grandparents, and my ancestors. Indeed, Black is beautiful.

2. Defies Gravity

I mean, who doesn’t love anything that literally scoffs at the laws of physics? Afro-textured hair can’t be weighed down, it can’t be easily controlled and tamed. It is not easily conquered.

3. Versatile

You can straighten it, blow-dry it, curl it, wear it in a protective style, wear it in a wash-n-go and/or pick it out like there’s no tomorrow and rock a glorious afro. The choice is yours!

4. Keeps you Guessing

I’ve now accepted the fact that my hair has it’s own personality. She tells me what to do. Not the other way around. I’m sure there are many other naturals (especially those of us with afro-hair) who can relate. I used to view this as a bad thing, as one more stressor in my life. Now, I just let it go, and enjoy the process of learning my hair better each and every day.

5. It’s so freakin’ cool!

Who doesn’t love afros? Seriously, who doesn’t? That’s because they’re so freakin’ cool! There are millions of folks who wish they could wear their hair in a fro.

So the next time you look at your type 4 hair in the mirror and you think to yourself, “I really hate my hair,” just think about the 5 things above, and you’ll feel a little better.
